leadership_excel_500"Recognizing a company for excellence in leadership development without recognizing the program director is like recognizing a university for excellence in their football program without recognizing the coach or recognizing a film without recognizing its director".

In celebrating these thoughts of Ken Shelton, CEO and editor-in-chief of Leadership Excellence, a monthly publication promoting leadership development, managerial effectiveness and organizational productivity for the last 25 years, we'd like to congratulate HCA's Executive Development Program Assistant Vice President, Dell Oliver, and Director, Carla Worthey, for getting HCA ranked #130 in LE's top 500 Leadership Development programs in the country.

These esteemed rankings include over 1000 companies known for developing leaders and choses the top 500 to place over seven categories: Large Organizations, Small/Midsize, Universities, Nonprofits, Government/Military, Consultants/Trainers/Coaches, and Consulting Groups.

Rankings for the 2012 Leadership Excellence award were based on seven criteria: Vision/mission; Design, content, and curriculum; Involvement and participation; Measurement and accountability; Presenters, presentations, and delivery; Take-home value; and Outreach.

Dell has been with HCA since 1991. She's served in roles from bedside nursing to her current position as AVP of Executive Development and Director of the Chief Nursing Officer Development Program.

She has over 25 years of nursing experience in many diverse areas in addition to beside nursing including insurance case management, public health, home health and nursing administration.

A native of Alabama, Dell attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa receiving a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing, then moving on to University of Phoenix to complete her MBA and MSN.

Carla has over ten years dedicated to healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotech industries and now, as Director of the EDP, is responsible for developing HCA's leadership bench strength by identifying and targeting development of future hospital administrators, primarily Chief Operating Officers and Chief Nursing Officers.

She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and an MBA from the Massey School of Business at Belmont University.

"I find that the quality of the LD program is directly related to the quality of the current program leadership," says Ken.

We couldn't agree more.

Congratulations, Dell and Carla.
