How HCA Got Doctors On Board Before The EHR Rollout

HCA is about to roll out EHRs to more than 250 hospitals and outpatient centers 20 hospitals at a time. The total cost per 20 hospital block? $1.9 million.

But while not every clinician is on board for the project, HCA has achieved an 80% physician adoption rate since the initial launch.

Richard Tayrien M.D., HCA's chief health information officer, says getting to that percentage came with a price. At first HCA offered voluntary physician participation. That amounted to too few commitments as many opted out of training.

Tayrien says it isn't necessary to convince every single clinician to use the system, but rather you can be targeted in your efforts.
