There's no shortage of success stories coming out of the HCA Executive Development Program. Our latest spotlight shines on Jackie DeSouza, a COO DP graduate, recently appointed chief executive officer of Lee's Summit Medical Center in Missouri.
Due to her excellent leadership skills and experience, Jackie now leads nearly 300 physicians and 500 employees at one of the nation's top performing hospitals on key quality measures, a recognition acknowledged by The Joint Commission, the nation's leading accreditor of health care organizations.
Prior to her November 28 appointment this year, Jackie was COO of Research Medical Center, a facility within the HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City's largest healthcare network. The center's achievements and accreditations were numerous under Jackie's 5 year leadership:
- American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus awards for heart failure and stroke and Gold for Heart Care
- certification from the Joint Commission as both a Primary Stroke Center and an Advanced Heart Failure Center
- certification as a Level 1 Trauma Center
- three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons
- accreditation as an American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program.
It's that kind of effort that makes Jackie an asset to Lee's Summit as she leads the management team and continues to build upon its own achievements in service and clinical excellence and employee engagement.
In addition to her career achievements with HCA, Jackie is also involved with several community organizations including serving on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Free Health Clinic and as one of the top five fund-raisers for the American Heart Association's Kansas City Heart Walk. She also supported Kevin Hicks in rebuilding Cardiovascular Services at RMC through the employment of 10 new cardiologists while retaining 95% of staff. This effort mitigated a significant market share loss while the hospital maintained a door-to -balloon time of less than 60 minutes.
Of her new facility, Jackie says the cohesive team at Lee’s Summit Medical Center collaborates to deliver not only excellent and compassionate patient care, but also the best possible outcomes and support for patients during their treatment. “People living in the area have progressive and innovative programs for their health needs in their neighborhood,” says DeSouza. “Lee’s Summit Medical Center is an exemplary hospital, and I’m excited to help continue the many strengths of the hospital’s unique patient-centered approach.”
Jackie is but one success story out of the Executive Development Program and an exemplary role model for excellence. She deserves congratulating on this well-deserved promotion to CEO.
The Executive Development Program reaches out across both the COO and CNO communities to build the kind of leadership that makes HCA the nation's top provider and innovator of healthcare services. Since its inception, the mission of the COO/CNO program has been designed to provide associates with mentorship, seminars and hands-on experience that will put them on a successful path towards becoming the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
We look forward to your enrollment and wish you the best of luck in your career.
