Three HCA Leaders Make Becker's Hospital Review List of Rising Stars

the-becker-threeThe 2013 Becker's review recognizes 25 healthcare leaders under the age of 40 who have excelled as healthcare leaders. These folks are recognized for the considerable accomplishments in their professional careers and have shown promise in continuing future success.

Leaders are chosen based on peer nominations and editorial research. Three of the 25 are HCA administrators: Andre Boyd, chief operating officer of TriStar Greenview Regional Hospital, Tom Jackson, chief financial officer of Parkridge Health System, and Sandee Moore, COO of Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

coo-Andre-BoydAndre Boyd, 36, has served as the Greenview Regional COO in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 2012, where he is responsible for maintaining the hospital budget. Prior to this, he was associate COO for two years at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri.

 

cfo-tom-jacksonTom Jackson, 33, has served as Parkridge Health System's CFO since February 2013. The Tennessee-based health system is comprised of Parkridge Medical Center, Parkridge East Hospital and Parkridge Valley Hospital. Tom has more than 14 years of financial management experience and previously served as CFO of Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snelville, Georgia.

 

coo-sandee-mooreSandee Moore, 31, has been with Eastern Idaho Regional as COO for two years now. Prior to this role, she served as associate administrator of Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. Since joining Eastern Idaho Regional, Sandee has pushed the hospital to achieving primary stroke designation. At the same time, she is serving as the 2012-2015 Idaho Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives.

HCA West Florida to Buy Three Tampa Bay Area Hospitals

HCA-West-Florida-purchaseIn a press release last week HCA announced it has signed a definitive agreement for the purchase of three Tampa Bay hospitals — Palms of Pasadena Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Tampa and Town & Country Hospital — from Franklin, Tennessee-based healthcare provider IASIS Healthcare.

Palms of Pasadena Hospital is a 307-bed facility in St. Petersburg. Memorial Hospital of Tampa and Town & Country Hospital are located in Tampa and have 183 and 201 beds, respectively. Upon closing of this transaction, the three hospitals will become part of the HCA West Florida Division.

IASIS and HCA are working closely to ensure a smooth transition for the hospital employees, patients and communities served by these three hospitals.

Subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions, this transaction is expected to close prior to year end. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Southern Hills Hospital CEO Appointed to ACHE

ceo-kimball-andersonKimball Anderson, chief executive officer of Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas since 2009, has been appointed to the American College of Healthcare Executives as the interim regent representing the state of Nevada.

In this role, Kim will be responsible for representing the interests of ACHE members and is the primary local liaison with chapters and other organizations in their established relationships with ACHE.

Kim, a Fellow of ACHE, said he is honored to represent healthcare executives throughout Nevada and that he is "grateful to the American College of Healthcare Executives for this opportunity to serve, and work through the continued healthcare challenges that face our state and nation."

With HCA since 1988, Kim formerly served as chief operating officer at Timpanogos Regional Hospital and Mountain View Hospital in Utah for 12 years. He first joined HCA as the Directory of Dietary at Mountain View.

His contributions to the Southern Hills community include creating and implementing new hospital programs and events such as the High School to Healthcare program that teaches local high school medical students about the industry, the Las Vegas Balloon Festival, a three-day benefit event for the Las Vegas Metro Police Department's non-profit Search and Rescue Team and his 2012 March of Dimes Award for "Administration – Nurses' Choice," where he was named top hospital CEO in Southern Nevada.

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital Appoints New CNO

congrats-to-Tamara-PeavyTamara Peavy has been named as Metropolitan Methodist's new chief nursing officer. A graduate of HCA's new Accelerated Market Program (AMP), Tamara was chosen to participate in the program for CNO Development. The AMP program targets local talent to fill market-based needs.

Tamara has been with Metropolitan Methodist since 2010 where she started as a vice president for nursing. In 2012, she joined the AMP program as an associate CNO and quickly progressed to the position of interim chief nursing officer, bringing more than 15 years of clinical and leadership experience.

Prior to her role at Metropolitan Methodist she supervised surgical services for South Austin Medical Center of the St. David's Healthcare Partnership.

Most recently, Tamara led a successful Joint Commission survey and CMS quality and regulatory survey with no direct clinical findings. She also led the implementation of a prescriptive patient satisfaction model that contributed to major improvements in patient satisfaction (HCAHPS) ratings at Metropolitan.

Her educational background includes a BSN from University of the Incarnate Word and MSN from the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Tamara began her new role as CNO at Metropolitan Methodist in July.

AHA Elects Jonathan Perlin As Chair-Elect Designate

HCA CMO Jon PerlinThe American Hospital Association has elected Dr. Perlin as its chair-elect designate for 2014. Dr. Perlin is currently a board member and, as chair-elect, will assume the chairmanship, the top elected position of the national organization, in 2015.

The AHA represents the country's hospitals and health systems that are accountable to the health of individuals and communities and are committed to health improvement.

"I look forward to working with the AHA, its members, and allied hospital associations, in support of the AHA mission to improve health and care during this challenging and exciting time," said Dr. Perlin.

Dr. Perlin has lead HCA since 2006, providing leadership for clinical services and performance improvement across HCA's hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and physician practices.

Most recently, a study by Dr. Perlin's team found among 18,000 elective deliveries, those born before 39 weeks are at higher risk for complications requiring neonatal intensive care.

HCA, under Dr. Perlin, also had published in the New England Journal of Medicine the results of the REDUCE MRSA study that was conducted at 43 affiliated hospitals and demonstrated a new approach to lower ICU-related bloodstream infections by 44%.

Currently a board member of the National Patient Safety Foundation and Meharry Medical College, Dr. Perlin has also served on the boards of National Quality Forum and The Joint Commission. He also chairs the HHS Health IT Standards Committee.

Broadly published on health care quality and transformation, Dr. Perlin is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Medical Informatics. He has faculty appointments at Vanderbilt University as an adjunct professor of medicine and biomedical informatics and at Virginia Commonwealth University as an adjunct professor of health administration.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Dr. Perlin has held multiple rankings on Modern Health's Most Influential Physician Executives over the years.

Coliseum Health Names New Chief Nursing Officer

Candice will serve as CNO for both Coliseum Medical Centers and the Coliseum Health System, brining with her an extensive background in forensic nursing, chest pain center, emergency services and critical care, Carroll

Prior to her new role, Candice served as CNO for Terre Haute Regional Hospital in Indiana where she lead the facility to two Grade "A" awards from the Leapfrog Group as well as helping attain hospital recognition by the Joint Commission as a Top Quality Performer in 2011 and 2012.

Among her many accomplishments is gaining Chest Pain Center Accreditation for Lewis Gale Medical Center in Virginia and developing a 12-bed cardiovascular step-down unit.

Once a board member for the Council on Domestic Abuse, a non-profit organization dedicated to the care of victims of violent crimes, Candice has also been a committee member on the Sexual Assault Response Team and volunteered as a forensic nurse examiner.

As a medical community leader, she organized the first Forensic Nursing Team in her area in 2012 and maintains her national certification in forensic nursing.

And last but not least, Candice is a recipient of the Daisy Award from the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), which recognizes "extraordinary nurses."

Candice earned her associate degree in nursing from The Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia, her baccalaureate of nursing and Master of Business Administration with a leadership focus from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Gulf Coast Medical Center Names New COO

Holly-Jackson-COO-GCMCJoining Gulf Coast Medical Center as the new chief operating officer is Holly Jackson. Holly comes over from The Medical Center of Trinity where she has served as the associate COO since her start with HCA in 2010.

While at Trinity, Holly was responsible for the management of a host of ancillary services including Facilities, Food Services, Respiratory Therapy, Rehab Services, Security, Communications and Environmental Services.

She also led a transition process to a $200 million replacement facility that involved her in the development and execution of plans for the new house-wide departmental operations, occupancy readiness, patient move processes and orientation for over 1,700 staff, physicians and volunteers.

Holly was also the administrator for a 46-bed satellite campus supporting Behavioral Health Services where she streamlined efficiency in the new multi-campus dynamic, stabilized operations and oversaw a $2.1 million renovation project.

Needless to say Holly brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her new role as Gulf Coast Medical's COO.

Ocala Health Names New Chief Operating Officer

Nathan-Vooys-Ocala-COOOcala Health, which includes Ocala Regional Medical Center and West Marion Community Hospital, has announced the appointment of Nathan P. Vooys as its new chief operating officer for the healthcare system.

Nathan will be responsible for providing administrative direction for the operation of ancillary departments within the two hospitals, lead physician recruitment initiatives and oversee construction projects.

Nathan joins HCA from Health Management Associates, Inc., having served as COO for Santa Rosa Medical Center in Milton, Florida since 2011.

During his tenure there, he spearheaded development of several service line programs, key physician alliances and general business development initiatives.

Before that Nathan was Assistant Administrator of East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, Georgia where he held similar responsibilities over a three-year period.

Nathan received his Bachelor of Science from Vanderbilt University and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business.

Conroe Regional Medical Center Names New CEO

Matt-Davis-CEO-Conroe-RegionalFormer chief operating officer for North Florida Regional Medical Center, Matt Davis, has been named CEO for Conroe Regional Medical Center. Matt will now oversee the 322-bed facility's rapid growth in the North Houston region.

In his six years at NFRMC, Matt led the hospital through expansions of Invision Imaging, the Cancer Center, Imaging Services, the Women's Center Operating Rooms/L&D/Post-Partum, Critical Care Services, Cardiac Services and most recently, the building of the 92-bed patient tower.

Among other accomplishments, Matt led physician recruitment, the development of numerous clinical service lines and the consistent quality operational performance NFRMC is known for.

Matt and his exceptional leadership, drive and passion for North Florida Regional will be greatly missed.

His new role as Conroe Regional's CEO begins September 23, 2013.

MountainView Hospital Announces New Chief Executive Officer

Chris-Mowan-MountainView-CEOStarting this September, Chris Mowan, FACHE, will serve as the new CEO of MountainView Hospital, the hospital has announced. Chris joins the facility after serving four years as chief operating officer for Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, both part of the Sunrise Health System.

Citing his experience in the Nevada market, Bryan R. Rogers, FACHE, and president of HCA Far West Division acknowledged that as Chris "continues to work within the Sunrise Health System, his leadership and knowledge will be valuable in continuing to advance the growth of healthcare services to our patients."

"At its inception," Chris said, "MountainView established a patient-centric culture that values the delivery of the safest, most compassionate care possible. I look forward to joining the team and carrying on the tradition of recognizing our employees and in engaging physicians as our strategic partners."

As the COO at Sunrise, Chris oversaw operations of many areas of the hospital and major service lines including the Nevada Neurosciences Institute, ancillary departments and physician recruitment.

He also completed several major hospital expansions, including renovation of the adult medical surgical and ICU floors and the rehabilitation unit.

Prior to his role at Sunrise, Chris served, among other roles, as COO at Del Sol Medical Center. In all, he has been with HCA for 18 years.

He received his bachelor’s in accounting from Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a master’s in business from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. 

Chris assumes his new role following the move of current CEO, Will Wagnon, FACHE, to the CEO position of Henrico, Parham and Retreat Doctor's Hospitals in the HCA Virginia network.

Retreat Doctors' Hospital Names New Chief Operating Officer

zach-mccluskey-new-coo-retreatHCA Virginia and Retreat Doctors' Hospital, a campus of Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, has named Zach McCluskey, FACHE, chief operating officer for the facility.

As COO, Zach will lead day-to-day operations for Retreat and serve as the principal administrator for HCA Virginia's first free-standing ER, West Creek Emergency Center, and the new Hanover Emergency Center, which is scheduled to open next spring.

"Zach has long been a valued leader within the HCA family and I am thrilled that he will be bringing his expertise and growth-oriented vision to Retreat Doctors’ Hospital," said Lisa Valentine, interim CEO at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. "I am confident that he will continue to have a positive impact on our organization."
Zach started with HCA as an associate administrator at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond before serving most recently as COO and ethics and compliance officer of HCA's StoneCrest Medical Center in Nashville.

While at StoneCrest he led initiatives that placed the facility in HCA's top 10 for patient satisfaction and led the division's surgical growth initiative.

His healthcare career started in critical care nursing at VCU Medical Center and he has worked as an EMT-Paramedic at various EMS agencies in Central Virginia.

He received both his bachelor's in nursing and master's in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia campus.

Medical City Children’s Hospital Names New CEO

Keith-Zimmerman-Childrens-new-CEOInterim CEO since December 2012, Keith Zimmerman has been appointed Medical City Children's Hospital's permanent CEO as of August 1, Erol Akdamar, Medical City CEO announced.

Erol told D Healthcare Daily that "Keith brings a wealth of experience in healthcare to the table, understanding both the importance of working closely with physicians and hospital staff, and a culture of commitment to exceptional patient care," also noting that he looks forward to working with Keith as he continues to set a national precedent in pediatric care for the hospital.

Keith joined Medical City in January 2011 as chief development officer after serving as the system vice president of business development for OhioHealth where he lead several multimillion dollar growth strategies, including the approval and development of a freestanding emergency department and a comprehensive outpatient cardiovascular diagnostic center.

As chief development officer for Medical City Hospital he led strategy and business development for all adult service lines and Medical City Children's Hospital.

As the Children's Hospital's CEO, Keith says he looks forward to continuing projects including the expansion of the Congenital Heart Surgery Program, operating room renovations, creation of a new pediatric imaging center and an adolescent bariatric surgery program, and the opening of the new Medical City Children's Hospital Urgent Care in September.

Keith holds a Master’s of Business Administration in Health Care Management from Regis University in Denver, along with an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Louisiana.

Southern Hills Hospital Names New CNO

Maura-Wright-Southern-Hills-CNOMaura Wright, currently the associate chief nursing officer at Osceola Regional Medical Center, has been named as the new chief nursing officer for Southern Hills Hospital effective September 16.

Maura has been with HCA since 2002 where she served in various nursing roles at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota. After transferring to Brandon Regional Medical Center, she was promoted to director of orthopedic and neuroscience services.

In 2012, she joined the HCA Executive Development program under the CNO track where she now serves in her current role as associate CNO for Osceola.

While at Osceola, Maura has managed perioperative services, ICU, nursing supervision, bed management and the Float Pool. Her leadership in the OR and sterile processing department resulted in Agency for Health Care Administration and Joint Commission surveys with zero findings.

"Southern Hills Hospital is fortunate to have Maura Wright join our team," said Southern Hills CEO Kimball Anderson. "Maura’s drive and compassion for patient safety, quality healthcare and high customer service standards will greatly benefit our patients, their families, physicians, employees and volunteers."

In addition to her upcoming promotion, Maura is a candidate for a Doctoral in health administration. She earned her Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, her Master of Science in nursing from the University of South Florida and her bachelor's in nursing from the University of Panama.

Maura assumes the role of CNO following the promotion of Natalie Ransom to CNO of sister facility, MountainView Hospital, in Las Vegas.

Timpanogos Regional Names New Chief Operating Officer

jeff-sollisThe Executive Development program sends its congratulations to Jeff Sollis for his promotion to chief operating officer of Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah.

Jeff joined the Wesley Medical Center team in November 2010 through the HCA Executive Development COO development program.

Prior to Wesley MC in Wichita, Kansas, Jeff worked as assistant administrator in the Health One-Denver market after earning his Master of Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jeff held multiple leadership positions at Wesley with responsibilities including that of the chief staffing officer.

Jeff will join the Timpanogos leadership team as COO in the MountainStar Division January 7, 2013.

Andy Miller Named New Chief Financial Officer of Fawcett Memorial

andy-millerThe HCA Executive Development Program would like to congratulate Andy Miller on his promotion to chief financial officer of Fawcett Memorial and Englewood Community Hospital, a 338-bed system in Southwest Florida.

Andy started his career with HCA in 2003 in Internal Audit out of Nashville.

Later in his career he transferred to the role of Controller at Trident Health System in Charleston where he was accepted into the CFO Development Program in 2011.

Among his many duties, Andy led the accounting department through several audits, receiving very high marks and playing a key role in decision making on important strategic projects of Trident such as Rehab, Cancer, Behavioral Health and the North Charleston ED expansion proposals. 

Andy is a graduate of Louisiana State University where he received his Bachelor of Science in accounting and later he received an additional accomplishment in his profession becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

Andy will join Fawcett Memorial and Englewood Community Hospital as Chief Financial Officer in the West Florida Division June 17, 2013.

Our Latest CNO Development Program Promotion, Debbie Anglemyer

Debbie-AnglemyerPlease join the Executive Development team in congratulating the promotion of former CNO Development program associate, Debbie Anglemyer.

Debbie is now CNO for Plantation General Hospital in Plantation, Florida.

She started her career with HCA in 2010 as director of telemetry services at Lee's Summit Medical Center, where she also joined the CNO Development program as an associate CNO.

In 2012 she was promoted to associate CNO II and transferred to Plantation General Hospital.

Debbie has eight years of management experience in internal and external clinical leadership roles in many diverse service lines.

She received her Bachelor of Science in nursing education from Research-Rockhurst College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri and her Masters of Science in management from Baker University of Professional and Graduate Studies, also in Kansas City.

Debbie was promoted to CNO of Plantation General Hospital in the East Florida Division in May.

OU Medical System Names New CEO of Children’s Hospital

john-hayes-ceo-ou-childrens-hospitalOU Medical has named Jon Hayes, MHA, CMPE, chief executive officer for its Children's Hospital. The 326-bed facility is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric hospital in Oklahoma. It's also the only freestanding children's hospital in the area.

Jon steps into the position formerly held by Charles Spicer, current president and chief executive officer of OU Medical System.

Prior to this, Jon served at The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine where he held various leadership positions involving children's healthcare since 2001.

Before his role in the Department of Pediatrics at the university, Jon served as clinics administrator of OU Physicians, director for an international health insurance program and program manager for the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

"Jon is a strategic leader who is committed to teamwork with a proven track record of building good physician and staff relationships," Charles Spicer said.

New Chief Operating Officer Joins StoneCrest Medical Center

He started his career with HCA as an assistant administrator in 2010 and in 2011 was accepted into the COO Development program as associate COO at Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, Georgia, where he was in charge of several key departments and initiatives.

"We are excited to welcome Drew to our team and the community," said Mark Sims, TriStar StoneCrest CEO. "His healthcare leadership experience and passion for making a difference in the lives of others will be a tremendous benefit for our patients and local residents."

Drew earned his bachelor’s in sports administration from University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, and his master’s in sports administration from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.

He later earned MHA and MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Drew started his COO role and joined the StoneCrest Medical Center team in the Tristar Division September 9, 2013.

Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center CEO Tim Tobin Retires

tim-tobinSpotsylvania Regional Medical Center's first chief executive officer, Tim Tobin, has retired. He announced his plan to retire early last month. Tim served as the facility's CEO since its opening in 2008.

"It's been a great honor to open Spotsylvania Regional and set it on a course for success," said Tobin. "From a plot of vacant woodland, we've been able to build a facility that has become an indispensable part of our community. I'm immensely proud of what our employees and physician partners have accomplished here – especially their unwavering commitment to patients."

"Tim directed the development of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center even before we broke ground," said Margaret Lewis, senior executive of HCA Virginia and president of HCA's Capital Division. "He has been an outstanding leader during its first three years of operation and created a patient-first culture that has earned the community’s trust."

Before joining Spotsylvania Regional, Tim served as CEO as three previous facilities – LewisGale Hospital Alleghany in Low Moor, Virginia; Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Virginia; and Coliseum Medical Centers in Macon, Georgia.

He started his career with HCA in 1985 as an evening and weekend administrator for Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and held positions CJW Medical Center also in Richmond and at LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.

Tim has been an active community leader as well as a leader in several healthcare organizations. Currently he's a board member of Rappahannock Goodwill Industries, appointed by the Governor to The Virginia Workforce Council.

In his retirement, Tim says he plans to stay in the Spotsylvania area, travel and spend time with his wife, Sue, and two college-age children. "It hardly seems possible that 28 years have passed," he said of his time with HCA. "I've enjoyed it tremendously – especially the people I've met and been privileged to work with. They're the ones who have made it all worthwhile."

Tim began his retirement September 1.

St. David's North Austin Medical Center Names Associate Chief Nursing Officer

james-pittman-acnoFormer director of the hospital's Kidney Transplant Center, James Pittman, R.N., M.S.N., has been named associate chief nursing officer for St. David's North Austin Medical Center.

James, who has more than 10 years of experience in health care, has been with St. David's since 2007.

"We are pleased to have James join our executive team," said Allen Harrison, North Austin Medical Center CEO. "James has proven to be an enthusiastic, vibrant leader who has had an exceptionally positive impact on both patient care and staff engagement throughout our facility."

While director, James was responsible for the wound care, hyperbaric and infusion therapy units, as well as overseeing the Kidney Transplant Center. In a similar role before this, he served as the clinical operations manager for the J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center at the Methodist Hospital System in Houston, Texas.

Currently James serves as vice chairman for the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and the United Network for Organ Sharing transplant administrators committee.

He also serves as an at-large member of the OPTN/UNOS policy and oversight committee.

As associate CNO, James' duties will expand across multiple hospital service lines including emergency services.

James earned both his Bachelor of Science in nursing and Master of Science in nursing from the University of Texas in Austin.
