Two weeks ago on October 1, the Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan., celebrated 80 years of delivering extraordinary healthcare by hosting a neighborhood block party, to which the entire community was invited. The facility is part of HCA Midwest Health System—Kansas City’s largest healthcare network.
Steven Wilkinson, president and chief operating officer of MMC described the event as "an opportunity for us to gather our Johnson County neighbors and friends together for a fun event while also providing important and beneficial health information".
While the event offered activities for all ages, the main goal was to educate the neighborhood with information on achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The hospital opened its doors in 1931 at the original location on Rockhill Road, a sprawling 97,980-square-foot facility costing nearly $1.3 million to construct and employing a mere 167 to its staff. In its early days costs reflected the economy of the time with private rooms at $5 a day and a flat $5 fee for all lab tests. Menorah moved to its current location in the mid 1990's and reopened its doors on October 10, 1996.
Since then the hospital's commitment has been to "provide extraordinary care and an unmatched experience for all of our patients." Wilkinson said also that, "Our dedication to quality and growth has been the cornerstone of our success since we first opened the doors in 1931. The resources we offer to the community ensure that Menorah can be trusted for excellent healthcare for generations to come.”
Today, Menorah has 800 employees and more than 600 physicians. The campus is comprised of four buildings, including the full-service, 158-bed acute-care hospital, medical offices and a surgery center. Menorah Urgent Care, located west of 69 Highway and 151st Street in Overland Park, is a physician-staffed full-service, walk-in healthcare center with a full medical team.
