Congratulations go out to Prince Baawuah and Jared Dunlap as the 2011 recipients of the HCA Corris Boyd Scholarship. Each of these young men will receive a $20,000 tuition contribution toward their individual pursuits in master's degrees in healthcare management.
The scholarship grants two minority students annually tuition to an AUPHA-member school of their choice. It was established in 2006 in honor of the late Corris Boyd, a senior healthcare executive with HealthTrust Purchasing Group and HCA. Corris, who passed in 2005, was hugely dedicated to improving diversity in healthcare and was well respected by his peers and community for championing the success of minority and women-owned businesses.
"We are pleased to award these scholarships to Prince and Jared," said Sherri Neal, the diversity officer here at HCA. "Both . . . have bright futures in healthcare management."
Improving diversity in healthcare management is fostered by the Boyd award and is one part of HCA's commitment to diversity within our own organization. It gives incredible students like Prince and Jared the opportunity to extend improved healthcare to each of their communities.
Prince, who currently resides in Brooklyn, will attend the University of Michigan working towards a Master of Public Health in healthcare management and policy. He earned his degree from the City College of New York (CUNY).
Jared is from Cloquet, Minnesota and graduated from UCLA with a degree in American Indian studies with a focus on pre-med/health. He is entering Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health where he will pursue his Master of Public Health in healthcare management.
Alongside our cultural competence programs, internal inclusion strategies and external partnerships, HCA implements several initiatives to help foster a culture of inclusion, including areas of education and awareness, workforce development, supplier and contracting diversity and culturally competent care.
We've also been recognized by the American Hospital Association and Profiles in Diversity Journal for our focus on promoting diversity in healthcare.
