Anyone who has ever been part of an organization knows the importance of great leadership, and this is certainly true at America’s hospitals. But with more and more of our current leaders nearing retirement age, how can we make certain there’s a high quality leadership pipeline? By preparing candidates well, that’s how.

Health Leaders Media agrees and has published a December 2010 article that highlights both the importance of and success of HCA’s COO Development Program.

The program, created in 2001, was designed to provide the best possible preparation for the next generation of hospital leaders. Candidates for the program have come from current HCA facilities, leading business schools, and professional business organizations.

What distinguishes HCA’s from other similar programs is its focus on placement in the program as a full-time job rather than simply a smattering of extra responsibilities piled atop a participant’s current roles and duties. Also, each program participant is assigned to a hospital where he or she is mentored by the current CEO, further ensuring the success of program participants.
